Two roads to Akron links

AASBD World Championships,
Akron OH

Both rally and local champions are invited to compete at the All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships which take place in July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. During race week, all champions and their families participate together in the week’s many festivities. On race day, local champions compete against other local champions, and rally champions compete against other rally champions. By the afternoon’s end, six new winners emerge to wear the traditonal scarlet jackets (rally champions) and gold jackets (local champions) signifying they are the world champions of the Stock, Super Stock and Masters divisions of the All-American Soap Box Derby.

Your road to Akron may be via winning your local championship race, or it may be an entire season of rally racing on many tracks. Either way, if your racer qualifies for the All-American race in Akron, it is certain to be a fun-filled week with memories to last a lifetime.

The RALLY Championship

Rally racing is the best way to experience the fun, competitiveness and camaraderie of soap box derby racing on a regular basis. You’ll gain experience with every race and, with each trip down the hill, build the bond between driver and parent—all the while accumulating points towards your region's rally championship.

The rally season begins immediately following, and ends several weeks prior to the championships in Akron. AASBD sanctioned rally races are held all across the country and participants can race in any sanctioned race and accumulate points towards that season’s rally championship. Recent rally races in our region have been held at tracks in La Mesa, Santa Maria, Oceanside, San Diego, Vallejo, Mountain View and Ventura CA; Tuscon and Superior AZ and Rio Rancho NM.

The season’s top points finishers* in each division (stock, super stock, and masters) will be invited to Akron to represent their region and to compete against other rally champions from around the world in the All-American Rally Championship race. (* The exact number of rally champions is determined by the number of rally races that were held in that region during the rally season.)

The LOCAL Championship Race

Communities all across the United States (and a few foreign countries) hold local Soap Box Derby Championsip races once a year. These are races for children who reside within the community sponsoring the local race. Racers are only permitted to compete in one local race per season and can only become a champion once in each division (stock, super stock, and masters). The winner of each division of a local race will be invited to Akron to represent their race city and to compete against other local champions from around the world in the All-American Local Championship race.

Check the race calendar in May for a list of the locals in Region 2.
